Everybody has different skin tone. From light skin with dark hair to dark skin with light hair. It's all different. What most people don't understand is that it is a matter of contrast that will make your skin look right for you.

A good example is as follows: If I were shooting an African-American woman with dark skin, I should think that she would want to look true to her skin color.

But if I shoot her in a black dress on a very dark background, her skin tone will be much lighter than if I chose a lighter background.

A blond woman in a white shirt on a light background can look kind of soft and cool, but put her in a dark sweater on a medium or shaded background and the results can be dramatic! The important thing here is not that you understand this, but that your photographer does. Most photographers think that you have to overexpose or open up for black skin. This is somewhat true, but you don't want your skin to be too light. If you are shot correctly you should look like you on a really good day.
